Legacy Akabak is getting on in years. The first version was presented at the AES 1995 in Paris. It had 2.1 as version-number and was available for a long time. The development of the old version is stopped, however recently a new version got ready to use, see at Akabak 3.1.

Legacy Version

The legacy version of Akabak can be downloaded nevertheless. It is easy to install. However, please note, the old Akabak is a 16bit compilation, which needs a special environment to run. The application makes use of filenames, which are formatted in the old "8.3"-DOS format.

The legacy version is only tested up to MS-Windows 2000. However, it seems to run fine even on XP and Win7 and Win10 (32bit).

The legacy version does not run on 64bit Windows systems. The only workaround is to install the 32bit emulator, which comes with your Windows system.

Akabak seems to run fine under Linux with the help of Wine.

Description

The philosophy underlaying Akabak is to provide a simple framework, even for complicated and extensive systems. The structures that are to be analyzed can be custom-built from standard elements, or compact components can be used. There are unlimited possibilities of interconnecting the individual components, so that even exotic designs can be simulated.

The program as a whole is designed to emulate the principles of loudspeaker design as closely as possible. One consequence of this is that all the parameters required by the models simulating the structures are easy to obtain or to measure. Computation is very fast, so that it is possible to use a trial-and-error method, or to investigate the effects of component tolerances. The accuracy of the simulation provides a sound basis for testing out design ideas or for dimensioning and matching the components of an electrical, acoustic or electro-acoustic design.

Apart from its simulation functions, Akabak also includes a range of tools, such as synthesis of passive networks with dissipative coils, the synthesis of active filters, tools for bass speaker design, filter design, a tool for using measurements as a component, a Thiele/Small parameter identification tool and more.
